24-Sep-2019

A decade back, shopping meant a lengthy drive to a store during specific and often tiresome hours, searching for a parking spot in a crammed lot, searching all aisles for the desired product, waiting in long lines and finally carrying purchases home.

But, today, with the digital revolution and internet boom, millions of people browse online marketplaces for products that can be shipped or delivered right to their doors or even downloaded straight onto their computers. Thus, it can be rightly said that online shopping has taken over the consumer world and completely transformed the way that companies do business and how shoppers purchase goods.

However, with ease and accessibility comes the chances of increased risk. Sadly, most of us are unaware or simply underestimate the cyber threats involved in online shopping. There might be people who may purposely cheat with their products and later hide behind strict policies that do not allow refunds or returns. Others may swindle people by forcing them to make payments and also steal their identity.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to stay safe online and some of them are listed below;

Buy only from trusted websites:

Always identify the location and contact information of the online retailer from where you are considering buying from before making a purchase. Some may exist only online who others might actually have a store in some locations. Try to find out the locations of the former type and their contact details. Also consider calling them directly to test out their customer service as legitimate businesses will usually have someone answering during regular business hours.

Always look for the ratings and reviews of sellers:

Keep in mind to always check not only the product reviews, but also how trustworthy others think the seller is. Many online marketplaces will allow people to rate and review the sellers themselves comparing these ratings and reviews can be useful in staying away from scammers. However, keep in mind that different people have different opinions. So, read all reviews and finally decide for yourself.

Read and understand the return and refund policies:

Most online marketplaces have standard and up-front return and refund policies, but some might leave it to individual sellers. They are also willing to answer any questions you may have about how they work. Sometimes scammers might use these policy loopholes to swindle buyers once the item is bought. However, keep in mind that all sellers with strict polices are not scammers. There might exist a legitimate reason to do so. Anyways, read all the refund and return policies before confirming the purchase.

Try alternate payment methods if credit card doesn’t seem safe:

Most people are nervous when it comes to the mode of payment. Sometimes entering all your credit card details won’t seem safe and there are chances of you being conned if they fall into wrong hands. Alternate payment methods, especially PayPal can be a great choice.  It acts as a secure middleman in the transaction and keeps all your personal details safe. Some banks also offer a one-time credit card number that you can use for online purchases. Usually, there is a fee for this type of service. Though, it may be worth it to you in certain situations.

Other basic precautions include having a secure internet connection and keeping all your computer software up-to-date. Also set up spending alerts and remember to never provide any of your personal details.

Keep in mind all the above safety measures, when you’ll identify any security threats and enjoy your online shopping experience without fear or anxiety.
